Kapetanova kuća restaurant

Interior

The Kapetanova kuća restaurant is located on the waterfront of Mali Ston, a small town 53 km from Dubrovnik and known for its defensive walls connecting it to Ston, the “city of salt” which was an important administrative centre of the Dubrovnik Republic. The house where the restaurant is located was once the headquarters of the port captain, hence the name of the restaurant.

In addition to its walls, Mali Ston is also known for the Mali Ston Bay, which is protected precisely because of the cultivation of Mali Ston oysters, which this restaurant has been offering to gourmets in gastronomic creations throughout the year since its establishment in 1986. Given that the main idea of the restaurant’s owners is to completely surrender to the flavours of the Mediterranean with organic products from their own production on their ecological farm, the desire was to create a true Mediterranean atmosphere through the interior and architectural materials that reflect the restaurant’s special features. The interior is dominated by pastel tones of beige in combination with blue and olive green, enriched with golden details.

Special attention was paid to lighting, and the space is dominated by spindle-shaped lighting fixtures that evoke sea elements with their shape. The dominant place is occupied by a bar covered with ceramic tiles whose texture is reminiscent of the Mali Ston oyster. A large terrace with new designer equipment provides an authentic Mediterranean experience with a view of the blue sea from where the most famous specialties from its kitchen come. The design process applied the “reuse” concept, where the existing chairs were given a new look with the author’s expression of Dubrovnik academic painter Nina Šimunović. The entire interior is rounded off by the new visual identity of the restaurant, on which we collaborated with the Šesnić&Turković studio, which combines the letter K and the captain’s profile into a unique visual story.
