Location: Zagreb, Branimirova ulica
Client: City of Zagreb
Area: 3000 m2
The project of the public area is planned so that the pedestrian who walks through the public area experiences a unique urban and architectural story of the Holocaust.
The position of the memorial is based on the location of the black locomotive with whom the memorial makes one image and frames it as a silent witness of the period. The memorial to the victims of the Holocaust is evoked by the tragedy of this atrocious crime, the vast number of victims and the way they were killed. It is planned as a memorial passage; the passage through which the passer-by must pass and thus experience the metaphysical encounter with the victims.
The project includes the extension of the green surface in the northern part of the area, which is important for this part of the town since the project is located in the area defined as the system of city squares and parks and known as the Green Horseshoe in spatial planning documents, which makes it part of the protected zone a (area of extremely well preserved and especially valuable historical structure of tremendous importance for the city). In the northern part of the project, the parking spaces are reduced, and pedestrians are thus offered a unique experience of the new public surface.
The shaping of the green surface evokes the theme of pain, a cut, a scar that the Holocaust left on the victims, but the selection of the plants and the names of green surfaces at the same time symbolically express the theme of hope and history of the Jewish people. The paving of the public surface metaphorically presents the current/future image of the world we want; where humanity is united and dialogue is respected, and we are all one in this digital age, as written in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which says: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
