Lukovica viewpoint

Public

The conceptual design envisages the development of the Lukovica viewpoint at the historic fort of the same name in Plat. The remains of the medieval fort are located on a small and steep stone promontory and follow the configuration of the terrain. The fort has been out of service for centuries, which makes it extremely difficult to refer to its original form, and the few historical sources mention a bridge that connected the fort to the mainland, the remains of whose supports are still visible today. Over the years, the sea has filled in the canal that separated the fort from the mainland, thus forming a paved road to the top. The steep paved road provides access to the unfenced, flat plateau at the top of the cape. The project plans to ensure adequate access to the plateau and prevent the possibility of falling from a great height. The project refers to the motif of casemates (Italian: casamatta), which are usually, in terms of layout, built-in niches in thick, massive walls. Given that the walls in this fort no longer exist, various vegetation has grown in that area. Respecting everything that was found, three “casemates” are placed on the plateau area, which are almost entirely surrounded by the abundance of green vegetation. This contrast, conditionally speaking, of full and empty, is visible both in the ground plan and in the space. Just as the casemates had openings for defense, which allowed the enemy to be seen from a safe distance, so here too, the casemates frame three dominant views from the lookout – towards Dubrovnik and Lokrum, towards the islands of Mrkan and Bobara, and towards Cavtat.
